Daegu Art Museum is hosting a solo exhibition of Yi Gee Chil, who was selected as the 2024 DArtist. The “DArtist(Daegu Artist)” project is an annual project of Daegu Art Museum that selects artists based in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region who continue to produce original and active works and supports them with solo exhibitions, collaborative programs, and archives for the following year.
Yi Gee Chil’s work crosses the boundaries of genres such as sculpture, performance, and painting, asking multifaceted questions about art and artistic practice.
The exhibition is organized to provide a multi-layered approach to his oeuvre with paintings, sculptures, and installations including representative and recent works that trace the trajectory of his work over the past three decades.
The works on display include The Work series from the 90s, which asks fundamental questions about “creation” and “sculpture” by delving into the interior of a natural stone while maintaining its appearance; The Studio series, which explores the meaning of a workspace and the problem of setting up a workspace; and Dwelling, which shows the process of expanding the periphery of the concept of space. A series of the Practice works, such as The Practice of Space, The Practice of Observation, and The Practice of Painting, which emerged from contemplating what it means to live as an artist and the process of connecting life and art, are being displayed on a large scale in Gallery 2 and 3 of Daegu Art Museum. For him, it is a process of thinking about “What does art mean to me as an individual?”, “Why am I doing this artistic practice?” and “What value am I trying to create through this art?”
The entire process of his work unfolds in a form that seeks to answer this question of “What can art be for me?”rather than asking the question, “What is art?”
This exhibition will be an opportunity to approach his work holistically, starting from the realization that the process of creating artworks is like human life where we face various difficulties and conflicts.
